Meditation

Looking for a meditation group? Maybe you are new to the area, or maybe you are new to meditation! Whatever your current situation, the groups below will welcome you. There are also a few teachers who offer individual instruction when they have time available.

Soto Zen Meditation
Sundays 7:00 pm

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Houghton, MI

We meet in the meditation room at Good Shepherd Church, and those who prefer to sit at home will sit at the same time with us.  Our meditation is for 40 minutes and then we either have a conversation about the reading or email each other with our comments.  We are reading a book by Dainin Katagiri, a Zen Buddhist priest.  His follower, Shoken Winecoff, founded the Ryumonji Zen monastery in Iowa, and he is our teacher and support.
Everyone is welcome.

Now meeting in person for those who are vaccinated

Greetings, All.  My name is Micah Cavaleri.  I am one of a few organizers that help lead the group.  We focus on Zen, but have had people join us from several different backgrounds over the years.  I myself am a Lutheran minister, and my meditation practice is Zen.  I have concentrated on Zen for about 20 years, finding teachers and teachings where I can.  Good Shepherd Sangha has had some connections with the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center and Lake Superior Zendo in Marquette, Michigan.  We have no formal teacher, but do offer basic instruction in zazen for newcomers.

Our practices are taken from Zen traditions, primarily Soto Zen.  We begin our sitting by chanting the Three Refuges.  Our sessions are usually shorter than those compared to more formal Zen centers, as we were started as a group for beginners... although we have met for many years now, so any experience is welcome.  After sitting meditation, we chant the Maha Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra.  At times, we conclude with what we call a dharma discussion, which is just a time for us to reflect together on Zen teachings and practice, although the conversation often takes its own course into other areas of the spiritual life.

If you are interested in joining us for a sit, you can drop in anytime.  If you wish, reach out by email.  We will and do respond.  Maybe we can meet with you via Zoom or FB… or even in person.  We would love to hear from you.

Holy Hour -- Silent Prayer / Reflection / Adoration
Sundays 12:00 noon (
after our 10am Eucharist)
Trinity Episcopal Church Sanctuary - Houghton, MI

Holy Hour falls within the realm of contemplative prayer, but is kind of its own thing. The Sacrament (the consecrated bread) is left on the altar, candles are lit, and some quiet music is usually playing. It's all about just sitting in the presence of God / Christ and just soaking it in. If we're going to give it a provenance I would say that it's of the "Western Christian Tradition (Anglican)." Most Roman Catholics would recognize it and many Episcopalians and Lutherans might recognize it as well.
